25 Step Guide to Designing and Buying a Kitchen
A Professional Furniture Designers Guide
Step 1. Shopping Heaven or Hell?
Introduction
It should always be an exciting event when buying a kitchen, with lots of beautiful objects to look at. So why does this joy turn into a sense of frustration or boredom so quickly for many? The simple answer is conflicting and often bad advise and kitchen design.
Buying a kitchen is expensive whatever your budget, so it is important to get the design right the first time. How you design your kitchen has a great bearing on the way that your home functions. The kitchen has become more central to spending quality time together in a more relaxed and informal enviroment. If this new attitude is not addressed then the home becomes fragmented and dull. If the kitchen purchase is looked on as a chore and dismissed quickly then it is easy to repeat this basic mistake. I have met too many people over the years who have purchased kitchens quickly when moving into a house, and repented unhappily for years to come.
Quite often my clients have wandered through lots of kitchen showrooms with similar looking kitchen displays and appliances. They have recieved varying degrees of interest or contempt from staff, and endless opinions about what is right for them, from people who have no experience, or design background. It is not surprising when they meet me in a kitchen showroom for the first time, that they are on their guard to fend off more well intentioned advise , and hope to wander in peace in the hope of spotting what they are looking for.
Can you get the information you need, to buy a kitchen, without experienced help? I would say proceed with caution If you have not purchased a kitchen in th past. My main objective When first meeting customers is to sift through the bad advise they have recieved and get to the essence of what they are looking for. Most specialist kitchen showrooms have much more to offer than what their quite often small showrooms can display, so asking for help is always better than not. If you are Looking for Bespoke hand built kitchens and arrive at an Italian Minimalist shrine then it is still worth having a good look! I have recently designed a cool and striking black and white laquered kitchen for a couple who started off with liking the idea of painted wood and oak! (kitchen photos will be arriving soon!)
Always start with an open mind and do not be easily lead to quick decisions. Often the first choice made is a popular option and well trodden! Fashion quite often gets in the way of finding something individual and memorable. Fashion in the kitchen industry is good to clear dead wood, (forgive the pun) but not always helpful when making an informed long term choice, so beware! Fashion styles can mature but you will have to look a little deeper to determin which one.
So can you enjoy the process of designing and buying your kitchen without falling into bear traps, and smile whilst stepping over obsticals, happily anticipating the next.
Then read this guide why don't you !
